ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਪਹਰ ਪਹਰ ਤੇ ਘਰੀਆਂ ਆਵ ਘਟੈ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥

din te pahar pahar te ghareeaa(n) aav ghatai tan chheejai ||

Day by day, hour by hour, life runs its course, and the body withers away.

ਕਾਲੁ ਅਹੇਰੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਧਿਕ ਜਿਉ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧॥

kaal aheree phirai badhik jiu kahahu kavan bidh keejai ||1||

Death, like a hunter, a butcher, is on the prowl; tell me, what can we do? ||1||

ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਵਨ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

so din aavan laagaa ||

That day is rapidly approaching.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋਊ ਹੈ ਕਾ ਕਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

maat pitaa bhaaee sut banitaa kahahu kooo hai kaa kaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Mother, father, siblings, children and spouse - tell me, who belongs to whom? ||1||Pause||

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਬਰਤੈ ਆਪਾ ਪਸੂ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

jab lag jot kaaiaa mahi baratai aapaa pasoo na boojhai ||

As long as the light remains in the body, the beast does not understand himself.

ਲਾਲਚ ਕਰੈ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦ ਕਾਰਨ ਲੋਚਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੨॥

laalach karai jeevan pad kaaran lochan kachhoo na soojhai ||2||

He acts in greed to maintain his life and status, and sees nothing with his eyes. ||2||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਮਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਮਾ ॥

kahat kabeer sunahu re praanee chhodahu man ke bharamaa ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O mortal: Renounce the doubts of your mind.

ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਪਰਹੁ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾਂ ॥੩॥੨॥

keval naam japahu re praanee parahu ek kee saranaa(n) ||3||2||

Chant only the One Naam, the Name of the Lord, O mortal, and seek the Sanctuary of the One Lord. ||3||2||

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਕਾਹੋ ॥

jo jan bhaau bhagat kachh jaanai taa kau acharaj kaaho ||

That humble being, who knows even a little about loving devotional worship - what surprises are there for him?

ਜਿਉ ਜਲੁ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਪੈਸਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਤਿਉ ਢੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਜੁਲਾਹੋ ॥੧॥

jiu jal jal mahi pais na nikasai tiu dhur milio julaaho ||1||

Like water, dripping into water, which cannot be separated out again, so is the weaver Kabeer, with softened heart, merged into the Lord. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗਾ ਮੈ ਤਉ ਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਭੋਰਾ ॥

har ke logaa mai tau mat kaa bhoraa ||

O people of the Lord, I am just a simple-minded fool.

ਜਉ ਤਨੁ ਕਾਸੀ ਤਜਹਿ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਰਮਈਐ ਕਹਾ ਨਿਹੋਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jau tan kaasee tajahi kabeeraa ramaeeai kahaa nihoraa ||1|| rahaau ||

If Kabeer were to leave his body at Benares, and so liberate himself, what obligation would he have to the Lord? ||1||Pause||

ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋਈ ਭਰਮਿ ਨ ਭੂਲਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

kahat kabeer sunahu re loee bharam na bhoolahu koee ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O people - do not be deluded by doubt.

ਕਿਆ ਕਾਸੀ ਕਿਆ ਊਖਰੁ ਮਗਹਰੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਜਉ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥੩॥

kiaa kaasee kiaa ookhar magahar raam ridai jau hoee ||2||3||

What is the difference between Benares and the barren land of Maghar, if the Lord is within one's heart? ||2||3||

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਸਿਵ ਲੋਕਹਿ ਜੈਬੋ ॥

i(n)dr lok siv lokahi jaibo ||

Mortals may go to the Realm of Indra, or the Realm of Shiva,

ਓਛੇ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਹੁਰਿ ਐਬੋ ॥੧॥

ochhe tap kar baahur aibo ||1||

but because of their hypocrisy and false prayers, they must leave again. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

kiaa maa(n)gau kichh thir naahee ||

What should I ask for? Nothing lasts forever.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਖੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

raam naam rakh man maahee ||1|| rahaau ||

Enshrine the Lord's Name within your mind. ||1||Pause||

ਸੋਭਾ ਰਾਜ ਬਿਭੈ ਬਡਿਆਈ ॥

sobhaa raaj bibhai badiaaee ||

Fame and glory, power, wealth and glorious greatness

ਅੰਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਸੰਗ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੨॥

a(n)t na kaahoo sa(n)g sahaaee ||2||

- none of these will go with you or help you in the end. ||2||

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਛਮੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

putr kalatr lachhamee maaiaa ||

Children, spouse, wealth and Maya

ਇਨ ਤੇ ਕਹੁ ਕਵਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

in te kahu kavanai sukh paaiaa ||3||

- who has ever obtained peace from these? ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਮਾ ॥

kahat kabeer avar nahee kaamaa ||

Says Kabeer, nothing else is of any use.

ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨ ਧਨ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮਾ ॥੪॥੪॥

hamarai man dhan raam ko naamaa ||4||4||

Within my mind is the wealth of the Lord's Name. ||4||4||

ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਭਾਈ ॥

raam simar raam simar raam simar bhaaee ||

Remember the Lord, remember the Lord, remember the Lord in meditation, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਡਤੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

raam naam simaran bin boodate adhikaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

Without remembering the Lord's Name in meditation, a great many are drowned. ||1||Pause||

ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਦੇਹ ਗ੍ਰੇਹ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥

banitaa sut deh greh sa(n)pat sukhadaaee ||

Your spouse, children, body, house and possessions - you think these will give you peace.

ਇਨੑ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਲ ਅਵਧ ਆਈ ॥੧॥

inh mai kachh naahi tero kaal avadh aaee ||1||

But none of these shall be yours, when the time of death comes. ||1||

ਅਜਾਮਲ ਗਜ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਪਤਿਤ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਨੇ ॥

ajaamal gaj ganikaa patit karam keene ||

Ajaamal, the elephant, and the prostitute committed many sins,

ਤੇਊ ਉਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲੀਨੇ ॥੨॥

teoo utar paar pare raam naam leene ||2||

but still, they crossed over the world-ocean, by chanting the Lord's Name. ||2||

ਸੂਕਰ ਕੂਕਰ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਤਊ ਲਾਜ ਨ ਆਈ ॥

sookar kookar jon bhrame taoo laaj na aaee ||

You have wandered in reincarnation, as pigs and dogs - did you feel no shame?

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਛਾਡਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਹੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੩॥

raam naam chhaad a(n)mrit kaahe bikh khaaee ||3||

Forsaking the Ambrosial Name of the Lord, why do you eat poison? ||3||

ਤਜਿ ਭਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਿਖੇਧ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹੀ ॥

taj bharam karam bidh nikhedh raam naam lehee ||

Abandon your doubts about do's and dont's, and take to the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਨ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੫॥

gur prasaad jan kabeer raam kar sanehee ||4||5||

By Guru's Grace, O servant Kabeer, love the Lord. ||4||5||

ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਕੀ ॥

dhanaasaree baanee bhagat naamadev jee kee ||

ਗਹਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਨੀਵ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਊਪਰਿ ਮੰਡਪ ਛਾਏ ॥

gaharee kar kai neev khudaaee oopar ma(n)dap chhaae ||

They dig deep foundations, and build lofty palaces.

ਮਾਰਕੰਡੇ ਤੇ ਕੋ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਧਰਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਬਲਾਏ ॥੧॥

maaraka(n)de te ko adhikaaee jin trin dhar moo(n)d balaae ||1||

Can anyone live longer than Markanda, who passed his days with only a handful of straw upon his head? ||1||

ਹਮਰੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥

hamaro karataa raam sanehee ||

The Creator Lord is our only friend.

ਕਾਹੇ ਰੇ ਨਰ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰਤ ਹਹੁ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਝੂਠੀ ਦੇਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

kaahe re nar garab karat hahu binas jaai jhoothee dehee ||1|| rahaau ||

O man, why are you so proud? This body is only temporary - it shall pass away. ||1||Pause||
