ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੬ ॥

Soohee, First Mehl, Sixth House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ikOankaar satigur prasaad ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਉਜਲੁ ਕੈਹਾ ਚਿਲਕਣਾ ਘੋਟਿਮ ਕਾਲੜੀ ਮਸੁ ॥

ujal kaihaa chilakanaa ghotim kaalaRee mas ||

Bronze is bright and shiny, but when it is rubbed, its blackness appears.

ਧੋਤਿਆ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਾ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੧॥

dhotiaa jooth na utarai je sau dhovaa tis ||1||

Washing it, its impurity is not removed, even if it is washed a hundred times. ||1||

ਸਜਣ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੈ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੰਨੑਿ ॥

sajan seee naal mai chaladiaa naal chala(n)nhi ||

They alone are my friends, who travel along with me;

ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਖੜੇ ਦਿਸੰਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jithai lekhaa ma(n)geeai tithai khaRe disa(n)n ||1|| rahaau ||

and in that place, where the accounts are called for, they appear standing with me. ||1||Pause||

ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਚਿਤਵੀਆਹਾ ॥

kothe ma(n)dap maaReeaa paasahu chitaveeaahaa ||

There are houses, mansions and tall buildings, painted on all sides;

ਢਠੀਆ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨੑੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਖਣੀਆਹਾ ॥੨॥

dhatheeaa ka(n)m na aavanhee vichahu sakhaneeaahaa ||2||

but they are empty within, and they crumble like useless ruins. ||2||

ਬਗਾ ਬਗੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਮੰਝਿ ਵਸੰਨੑਿ ॥

bagaa bage kapaRe teerath ma(n)jh vasa(n)nhi ||

The herons in their white feathers dwell in the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਘੁਟਿ ਘੁਟਿ ਜੀਆ ਖਾਵਣੇ ਬਗੇ ਨਾ ਕਹੀਅਨੑਿ ॥੩॥

ghut ghut jeeaa khaavane bage naa kaheeanhi ||3||

They tear apart and eat the living beings, and so they are not called white. ||3||

ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰੁਖੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਮੈ ਮੈਜਨ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੁਲੰਨੑਿ ॥

si(n)mal rukh sareer mai maijan dekh bhula(n)nhi ||

My body is like the simmal tree; seeing me, other people are fooled.

ਸੇ ਫਲ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਨੑੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਹੰਨੑਿ ॥੪॥

se phal ka(n)m na aavanhee te gun mai tan ha(n)nhi ||4||

Its fruits are useless - just like the qualities of my body. ||4||

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ਡੂਗਰ ਵਾਟ ਬਹੁਤੁ ॥

a(n)dhulai bhaar uthaaiaa doogar vaat bahut ||

The blind man is carrying such a heavy load, and his journey through the mountains is so long.

ਅਖੀ ਲੋੜੀ ਨਾ ਲਹਾ ਹਉ ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘਾ ਕਿਤੁ ॥੫॥

akhee loRee naa lahaa hau chaR la(n)ghaa kit ||5||

My eyes can see, but I cannot find the Way. How can I climb up and cross over the mountain? ||5||

ਚਾਕਰੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਤੁ ॥

chaakareeaa cha(n)giaaeeaa avar siaanap kit ||

What good does it do to serve, and be good, and be clever?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਬਧਾ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ॥੬॥੧॥੩॥

naanak naam samaal too(n) badhaa chhutahi jit ||6||1||3||

O Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. ||6||1||3||

Soohee, First Mehl:

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ਬੇੜੁਲਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲੰਘਹਿ ਵਹੇਲਾ ॥

jap tap kaa ba(n)dh beRulaa jit la(n)ghahi vahelaa ||

Build the raft of meditation and self-discipline, to carry you across the river.

ਨਾ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਨਾ ਊਛਲੈ ਐਸਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੧॥

naa saravar naa oochhalai aisaa pa(n)th suhelaa ||1||

There will be no ocean, and no rising tides to stop you; this is how comfortable your path shall be. ||1||

ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਜੀਠੜਾ ਰਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਸਦ ਰੰਗ ਢੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

teraa eko naam ma(n)jeethaRaa rataa meraa cholaa sad ra(n)g dholaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Your Name alone is the color, in which the robe of my body is dyed. This color is permanent, O my Beloved. ||1||Pause||

ਸਾਜਨ ਚਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

saajan chale piaariaa kiu melaa hoee ||

My beloved friends have departed; how will they meet the Lord?

ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਗੰਠੜੀਐ ਮੇਲੇਗਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥

je gun hovahi ga(n)thaReeai melegaa soee ||2||

If they have virtue in their pack, the Lord will unite them with Himself. ||2||

ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਜੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥

miliaa hoi na veechhuRai je miliaa hoee ||

Once united with Him, they will not be separated again, if they are truly united.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

aavaa gaun nivaariaa hai saachaa soee ||3||

The True Lord brings their comings and goings to an end. ||3||

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਸੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਚੋਲਾ ॥

haumai maar nivaariaa seetaa hai cholaa ||

One who subdues and eradicates egotism, sews the robe of devotion.

ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹ ਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੋਲਾ ॥੪॥

gur bachanee phal paaiaa sah ke a(n)mrit bolaa ||4||

Following the Word of the Guru's Teachings, she receives the fruits of her reward, the Ambrosial Words of the Lord. ||4||

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਸਹੁ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

naanak kahai saheleeho sahu kharaa piaaraa ||

Says Nanak, O soul-brides, our Husband Lord is so dear!

ਹਮ ਸਹ ਕੇਰੀਆ ਦਾਸੀਆ ਸਾਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੫॥੨॥੪॥

ham sah kereeaa daaseeaa saachaa khasam hamaaraa ||5||2||4||

We are the servants, the hand-maidens of the Lord; He is our True Lord and Master. ||5||2||4||

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Soohee, First Mehl:

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਭਾਉ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਵਾਰਸੀ ॥

jin kau bhaa(n)dai bhaau tinaa savaarasee ||

Those whose minds are filled with love of the Lord, are blessed and exalted.

ਸੂਖੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਸਾਉ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਸੀ ॥

sookhee karai pasaau dookh visaarasee ||

They are blessed with peace, and their pains are forgotten.

ਸਹਸਾ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਸੀ ॥੧॥

sahasaa moole naahi sarapar taarasee ||1||

He will undoubtedly, certainly save them. ||1||

ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਇ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲੀਖਿਆ ॥

tinhaa miliaa gur aai jin kau leekhiaa ||

The Guru comes to meet those whose destiny is so pre-ordained.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੀਖਿਆ ॥

a(n)mrit har kaa naau devai deekhiaa ||

He blesses them with the Teachings of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.

ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ਭਵਹਿ ਨ ਭੀਖਿਆ ॥੨॥

chaalahi satigur bhaai bhavahi na bheekhiaa ||2||

Those who walk in the Will of the True Guru, never wander begging. ||2||

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਦੂਜੇ ਨਿਵੈ ਕਿਸੁ ॥

jaa kau mahal hajoor dooje nivai kis ||

And one who lives in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, why should he bow down to any other?

ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਣੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਮੂਲੇ ਪੁਛ ਤਿਸੁ ॥

dar daravaanee naahi moole puchh tis ||

The gate-keeper at the Lord's Gate shall not stop him to ask any questions.

ਛੁਟੈ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਦਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ॥੩॥

chhutai taa kai bol saahib nadar jis ||3||

And one who is blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace - by his words, others are emancipated as well. ||3||

ਘਲੇ ਆਣੇ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਮਤੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

ghale aane aap jis naahee doojaa matai koi ||

The Lord Himself sends out, and recalls the mortal beings; no one else gives Him advice.

ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਸੋਇ ॥

dhaahi usaare saaj jaanai sabh soi ||

He Himself demolishes, constructs and creates; He knows everything.

ਨਾਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੫॥

naau naanak bakhasees nadaree karam hoi ||4||3||5||

O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord is the blessing, given to those who receive His Mercy, and His Grace. ||4||3||5||
