ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਜਗਿ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥

vin naavai sabh bharamade nit jag totaa saisaar ||

Without the Name of the Lord, everyone wanders around the world, losing.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

manamukh karam kamaavane haumai a(n)dh gubaar ||

The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in the pitch black darkness of egotism.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

guramukh a(n)mrit peevanaa naanak sabad veechaar ||1||

The Gurmukhs drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, O Nanak, contemplating the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

sahaje jaagai sahaje sovai ||

He wakes in peace, and he sleeps in peace.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

guramukh anadin usatat hovai ||

The Gurmukh praises the Lord night and day.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

manamukh bharamai sahasaa hovai ||

The self-willed manmukh remains deluded by his doubts.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

a(n)tar chi(n)taa need na sovai ||

He is filled with anxiety, and he cannot even sleep.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਸਵਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

giaanee jaagahi savahi subhaai ||

The spiritually wise wake and sleep in peace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥

naanak naam ratiaa bal jaau ||2||

Nanak is a sacrifice to those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਤਿਆ ॥

se har naam dhiaavahi jo har ratiaa ||

They alone meditate on the Lord's Name, who are imbued with the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਇਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿਆ ॥

har ik dhiaavahi ik iko har satiaa ||

They meditate on the One Lord; the One and Only Lord is True.

ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਕੁ ਇਕੋ ਉਤਪਤਿਆ ॥

har iko varatai ik iko utapatiaa ||

The One Lord is pervading everywhere; the One Lord created the Universe.

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਡਰੁ ਸਟਿ ਘਤਿਆ ॥

jo har naam dhiaavahi tin dar sat ghatiaa ||

Those who meditate on the Lord's Name, cast out their fears.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਦੇਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ॥੯॥

guramatee devai aap guramukh har japiaa ||9||

The Lord Himself blesses them with Guru's Instruction; the Gurmukh meditates on the Lord. ||9||

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

a(n)tar giaan na aaio jit kichh sojhee paai ||

Spiritual wisdom, which would bring understanding, does not enter into his mind.

ਵਿਣੁ ਡਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

vin dithaa kiaa saalaaheeai a(n)dhaa a(n)dh kamaai ||

Without seeing, how can he praise the Lord? The blind act in blindness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥

naanak sabad pachhaaneeai naam vasai man aai ||1||

O Nanak, when one realizes the Word of the Shabad, then the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਇਕਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

ikaa baanee ik gur iko sabad veechaar ||

There is One Bani; there is One Guru; there is one Shabad to contemplate.

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਹਟੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

sachaa saudaa hat sach ratanee bhare bha(n)daar ||

True is the merchandise, and true is the shop; the warehouses are overflowing with jewels.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਜੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

gur kirapaa te paaeean je devai devanahaar ||

By Guru's Grace, they are obtained, if the Great Giver gives them.

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਖਟਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

sachaa saudaa laabh sadaa khatiaa naam apaar ||

Dealing in this true merchandise, one earns the profit of the incomparable Naam.

ਵਿਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

vikh vich a(n)mrit pragatiaa karam peeaavanahaar ||

In the midst of poison, the Ambrosial Nectar is revealed; by His Mercy, one drinks it in.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

naanak sach salaaheeai dha(n)n savaaranahaar ||2||

O Nanak, praise the True Lord; blessed is the Creator, the Embellisher. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ॥

jinaa a(n)dar kooR varatai sach na bhaavaee ||

Those who are permeated by falsehood, do not love the Truth.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਕੂੜਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥

je ko bolai sach kooRaa jal jaavaee ||

If someone speaks the Truth, falsehood is burnt away.

ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ ਰਜੈ ਕੂੜਿ ਜਿਉ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਖਾਵਈ ॥

kooRiaaree rajai kooR jiu visataa kaag khaavaee ||

The false are satisfied by falsehood, like the crows who eat manure.

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਈ ॥

jis har hoi kripaal so naam dhiaavaee ||

When the Lord grants His Grace, then one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥੧੦॥

har guramukh naam araadh kooR paap lahi jaavaee ||10||

As Gurmukh, worship the Lord's Name in adoration; fraud and sin shall disappear. ||10||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Salok, Third Mehl:

ਸੇਖਾ ਚਉਚਕਿਆ ਚਉਵਾਇਆ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣਿ ॥

sekhaa chauchakiaa chauvaaiaa ehu man ikat ghar aan ||

O Shaykh, you wander in the four directions, blown by the four winds; bring your mind back to the home of the One Lord.

ਏਹੜ ਤੇਹੜ ਛਡਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

ehaR tehaR chhad too gur kaa sabad pachhaan ||

Renounce your petty arguments, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਢਹਿ ਪਉ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

satigur agai dhahi pau sabh kichh jaanai jaan ||

Bow in humble respect before the True Guru; He is the Knower who knows everything.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਲਾਇ ਤੂ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੁ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥

aasaa manasaa jalaai too hoi rahu mihamaan ||

Burn away your hopes and desires, and live like a guest in this world.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਭੀ ਚਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥

satigur kai bhaanai bhee chalahi taa daragah paavahi maan ||

If you walk in harmony with the True Guru's Will, then you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਧਿਗੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਖਾਣੁ ॥੧॥

naanak j naam na chetanee tin dhig painan dhig khaan ||1||

O Nanak, those who do not contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord - cursed are their clothes, and cursed is their food. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

har gun tot na aavaee keemat kahan na jaai ||

There is no end to the Lord's Glorious Praises; His worth cannot be described.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

naanak guramukh har gun ravahi gun mahi rahai samaai ||2||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they are absorbed in His Glorious Virtues. ||2||

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਚੋਲੀ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਕਢਿ ਪੈਧੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥

har cholee deh savaaree kadh paidhee bhagat kar ||

The Lord has adorned the coat of the body; He has embroidered it with devotional worship.

ਹਰਿ ਪਾਟੁ ਲਗਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ॥

har paat lagaa adhikaaee bahu bahu bidh bhaat kar ||

The Lord has woven His silk into it, in so many ways and fashions.

ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੂਝਣਹਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਕਰਿ ॥

koee boojhai boojhanahaaraa a(n)tar bibek kar ||

How rare is that man of understanding, who understands, and deliberates within.

ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਹਰਿ ॥

so boojhai ehu bibek jis bujhaae aap har ||

He alone understands these deliberations, whom the Lord Himself inspires to understand.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਹਰਿ ॥੧੧॥

jan naanak kahai vichaaraa guramukh har sat har ||11||

Poor servant Nanak speaks: the Gurmukhs know the Lord, the Lord is True. ||11||
