ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਇਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਤਿਉ ਜਾਹਾ ॥
gal jevaRee aape paaidaa piaaraa jiu prabh khi(n)chai tiu jaahaa ||
The Beloved Himself puts the chains around their necks; as God pulls them, must they go.
ਜੋ ਗਰਬੈ ਸੋ ਪਚਸੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ॥੪॥੬॥
jo garabai so pachasee piaare jap naanak bhagat samaahaa ||4||6||
Whoever harbors pride shall be destroyed, O Beloved; meditating on the Lord, Nanak is absorbed in devotional worship. ||4||6||

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
anik janam vichhuRe dukh paaiaa manamukh karam karai aha(n)kaaree ||
Separated from the Lord for countless lifetimes, the self-willed manmukh suffers in pain, engaged in acts of egotism.
ਸਾਧੂ ਪਰਸਤ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
saadhoo parasat hee prabh paaiaa gobid saran tumaaree ||1||
Beholding the Holy Saint, I found God; O Lord of the Universe, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||
ਗੋਬਿਦ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗੀ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
gobid preet lagee at piaaree ||
The Love of God is very dear to me.
ਜਬ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਭਏ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jab satasa(n)g bhae saadhoo jan hiradai miliaa saa(n)t muraaree || rahaau ||
When I joined the Sat Sangat, the Company of the Holy People, the Lord, the embodiment of peace, came into my heart. ||Pause||
ਤੂ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਸਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਗਵਾਰੀ ॥
too hiradai gupat vasahi din raatee teraa bhaau na bujhahi gavaaree ||
You dwell, hidden, within my heart day and night, Lord; but the poor fools do not understand Your Love.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
satigur purakh miliaa prabh pragatiaa gun gaavai gun veechaaree ||2||
Meeting with the Almighty True Guru, God was revealed to me; I sing His Glorious Praises, and reflect upon His Glories. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
guramukh pragaas bhaiaa saat aaee duramat budh nivaaree ||
As Gurmukh, I have become enlightened; peace has come, and evil-mindedness has been dispelled from my mind.
ਆਤਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
aatam braham cheen sukh paaiaa satasa(n)gat purakh tumaaree ||3||
Understanding the relationship of the individual soul with God, I have found peace, in Your Sat Sangat, Your True Congregation, O Lord. ||3||
ਪੁਰਖੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥
purakhai purakh miliaa gur paaiaa jin kau kirapaa bhaee tumaaree ||
Those who are blessed by Your Kind Mercy, meet the Almighty Lord, and find the Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੭॥
naanak atul sahaj sukh paaiaa anadin jaagat rahai banavaaree ||4||7||
Nanak has found the immeasurable, celestial peace; night and day, he remains awake to the Lord, the Master of the Forest of the Universe. ||4||7||

Sorat'h, Fourth Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
har siu preet a(n)tar man bedhiaa har bin rahan na jaaee ||
The inner depths of my mind are pierced by love for the Lord; I cannot live without the Lord.
ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨੀਰੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
jiu machhulee bin neerai binasai tiu naamai bin mar jaaee ||1||
Just as the fish dies without water, I die without the Lord's Name. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਈ ॥
mere prabh kirapaa jal devahu har naaee ||
O my God, please bless me with the water of Your Name.
ਹਉ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਗਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau a(n)tar naam ma(n)gaa din raatee naame hee saa(n)t paaee || rahaau ||
I beg for Your Name, deep within myself, day and night; through the Name, I find peace. ||Pause||
ਜਿਉ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕੁ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਲਲਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
jiu chaatrik jal bin bilalaavai bin jal piaas na jaaee ||
The song-bird cries out for lack of water - without water, its thirst cannot be quenched.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥੨॥
guramukh jal paavai sukh sahaje hariaa bhaai subhaaee ||2||
The Gurmukh obtains the water of celestial bliss, and is rejuvenated, blossoming forth through the blessed Love of the Lord. ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਖੇ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਡੋਲਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
manamukh bhookhe dah dis dolahi bin naavai dukh paaee ||
The self-willed manmukhs are hungry, wandering around in the ten directions; without the Name, they suffer in pain.
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਆਵੈ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
janam marai phir jonee aavai daragahi milai sajaaee ||3||
They are born, only to die, and enter into reincarnation again; in the Court of the Lord, they are punished. ||3||
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
kripaa karahi taa har gun gaavah har ras a(n)tar paaee ||
But if the Lord shows His Mercy, then one comes to sing His Glorious Praises; deep within the nucleus of his own self, he finds the sublime essence of the Lord's elixir.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੪॥੮॥
naanak deen daiaal bhae hai trisanaa sabad bujhaaee ||4||8||
The Lord has become Merciful to meek Nanak, and through the Word of the Shabad, his desires are quenched. ||4||8||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਪੰਚਪਦਾ ॥

Sorat'h, Fourth Mehl, Panch-Padhay:
ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਧੀ ਤੇ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
achar charai taa sidh hoee sidhee te budh paaee ||
If one eats the uneatable, then he becomes a Siddha, a being of perfect spirituality; through this perfection, he obtains wisdom.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੇ ਸਰ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਾਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
prem ke sar laage tan bheetar taa bhram kaatiaa jaaee ||1||
When the arrow of the Lord's Love pierces his body, then his doubt is eradicated. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
mere gobid apune jan kau dehi vadiaaee ||
O my Lord of the Universe, please bless Your humble servant with glory.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramat raam naam paragaasahu sadaa rahahu saranaaee || rahaau ||
Under Guru's Instructions, enlighten me with the Lord's Name, that I may dwell forever in Your Sanctuary. ||Pause||
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਚੇਤਿ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥
ihu sa(n)saar sabh aavan jaanaa man moorakh chet ajaanaa ||
This whole world is engrossed in coming and going; O my foolish and ignorant mind, be mindful of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥੨॥
har jeeu kripaa karahu gur melahu taa har naam samaanaa ||2||
O Dear Lord, please, take pity upon me, and unite me with the Guru, that I may merge in the Lord's Name. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਥੁ ਸੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jis kee vath soee prabh jaanai jis no dei s paae ||
Only one who has it knows God; he alone has it, to whom God has given it
ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ॥੩॥
vasat anoop at agam agochar gur pooraa alakh lakhaae ||3||
- so very beautiful, unapproachable and unfathomable. Through the Perfect Guru, the unknowable is known. ||3||
ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹ ਚਾਖੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਕੀ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥
jin ih chaakhee soee jaanai goo(n)ge kee mithiaaee ||
Only one who tastes it knows it, like the mute, who tastes the sweet candy, but cannot speak of it.
