ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ॥
jogee bhogee kaapaRee kiaa bhavahi disa(n)tar ||
Why do the Yogis, the revellers, and the beggars wander in foreign lands?
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੑਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ॥੩॥
gur kaa sabad na cheenhhee tat saar nira(n)tar ||3||
They do not understand the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and the essence of excellence within them. ||3||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
pa(n)dit paadhe joisee nit paRhahi puraanaa ||
The Pandits, the religious scholars, the teachers and astrologers, and those who endlessly read the Puraanas,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
a(n)tar vasat na jaananhee ghat braham lukaanaa ||4||
do not know what is within; God is hidden deep within them. ||4||
ਇਕਿ ਤਪਸੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
ik tapasee ban mahi tap karahi nit teerath vaasaa ||
Some penitents perform penance in the forests, and some dwell forever at sacred shrines.
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
aap na cheenahi taamasee kaahe bhae udaasaa ||5||
The unenlightened people do not understand themselves - why have they become renunciates? ||5||
ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik bi(n)d jatan kar raakhade se jatee kahaavahi ||
Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥
bin gurasabad na chhootahee bhram aavahi jaavahi ||6||
But without the Guru's Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||
ਇਕਿ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
ik girahee sevak saadhikaa guramatee laage ||
Some are householders, servants, and seekers, attached to the Guru's Teachings.
ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੭॥
naam daan isanaan driR har bhagat s jaage ||7||
They hold fast to the Naam, to charity, to cleansing and purification; they remain awake in devotion to the Lord. ||7||
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥
gur te dar ghar jaaneeai so jaai sinjaanai ||
Through the Guru, the Gate of the Lord's Home is found, and that place is recognized.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੮॥੧੪॥
naanak naam na veesarai saache man maanai ||8||14||
Nanak does not forget the Naam; his mind has surrendered to the True Lord. ||8||14||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
manasaa manahi samaaile bhaujal sach taranaa ||
Stilling the desires of the mind, the mortal truly crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥
aad jugaad daiaal too thaakur teree saranaa ||1||
In the very beginning, and throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master; I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||
ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
too daatau ham jaachikaa har darasan deejai ||
You are the Giver, and I am a mere beggar. Lord, please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh naam dhiaaeeai man ma(n)dar bheejai ||1|| rahaau ||
The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; the temple of his mind resounds with joy. ||1||Pause||
ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
kooRaa laalach chhodeeai tau saach pachhaanai ||
Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad samaaeeai paramaarath jaanai ||2||
So let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and know this supreme realization. ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥
ihu man raajaa lobheeaa lubhatau lobhaaee ||
This mind is a greedy king, engrossed in greed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
guramukh lobh nivaareeai har siu ban aaee ||3||
The Gurmukh eliminates his greed, and comes to an understanding with the Lord. ||3||
ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kalar khetee beejeeai kiu laahaa paavai ||
Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit?
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
manamukh sach na bheejaee kooR kooR gadaavai ||4||
The self-willed manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. ||4||
ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
laalach chhodahu a(n)dhiho laalach dukh bhaaree ||
So renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain.
ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
saachau saahib man vasai haumai bikh maaree ||5||
When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. ||5||
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
dubidhaa chhod kuvaataRee moosahuge bhaaee ||
Renounce the evil way of duality, or you shall be plundered, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥
ahinis naam salaaheeai satigur saranaaee ||6||
Day and night, praise the Naam, in the Sanctuary of the True Guru's protection. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥
manamukh pathar sail hai dhrig jeevan pheekaa ||
The self-willed manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is cursed and useless.
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥
jal mahi ketaa raakheeai abh a(n)tar sookaa ||7||
No matter now long a stone is kept under water, it still remains dry at its core. ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
har kaa naam nidhaan hai poorai gur deeaa ||
The Name of the Lord is the treasure; the Perfect Guru has given it to me.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
naanak naam na veesarai math a(n)mrit peeaa ||8||15||
O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, churns and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||8||15||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥
chale chalanahaar vaat vataaiaa ||
The travellers travel from one road to another.
ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
dha(n)dh pite sa(n)saar sach na bhaaiaa ||1||
The world is engrossed in its entanglements, and does not appreciate the Truth. ||1||
ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kiaa bhaveeai kiaa dhoodheeai gur sabad dikhaaiaa ||
Why wander around, and why go searching, when the Guru's Shabad reveals Him to us?
ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਸਰਜਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mamataa mohu visarajiaa apanai ghar aaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||
Leaving behind egotism and attachment, I have arrived at my own home. ||1||Pause||
ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sach milai sachiaar kooR na paaeeai ||
Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood.
ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
sache siu chit laai bahuR na aaeeai ||2||
Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again. ||2||
ਮੋਇਆ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੂ ॥
moiaa kau kiaa rovahu roi na jaanahoo ||
Why do you weep for the dead? You do not know how to weep.
ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੂ ॥੩॥
rovahu sach salaahi hukam pachhaanahoo ||3||
Weep by praising the True Lord, and recognize His Command. ||3||
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukamee vajahu likhaai aaiaa jaaneeai ||
Blessed is the birth of one who is destined to abide by the Lord's Command.
ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ॥੪॥
laahaa palai paai hukam sinjaaneeai ||4||
He obtains the true profit, realizing the Lord's Command. ||4||
