Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਹਦੇ ਖੁਹਦੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਹਰੁ ॥
rahade khuhade ni(n)dak maarian kar aape aahar ||
By their own efforts, the slanderers have destroyed all remnants of themselves.
ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਹਰੁ ॥੧॥
sa(n)t sahaaee naanakaa varatai sabh jaahar ||1||
The Support of the Saints, O Nanak, is manifest, pervading everywhere. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਮੁੰਢ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੈ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਹਥੁ ॥
mu(n)dhahu bhule mu(n)dh te kithai paain hath ||
Those who went astray from the Primal Being in the very beginning - where can they find refuge?
ਤਿੰਨੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥੨॥
ti(n)nai maare naanakaa j karan kaaran samarath ||2||
O Nanak, they are struck down by the All-powerful, the Cause of causes. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਲੈ ਫਾਹੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੁਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
lai phaahe raatee turahi prabh jaanai praanee ||
They take the noose in their hands, and go out at night to strangle others, but God knows everything, O mortal.
ਤਕਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਈਆ ਲੁਕਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਠਾਣੀ ॥
takahi naar paraaeeaa luk a(n)dar thaanee ||
They spy on other men's women, concealed in their hiding places.
ਸੰਨੑੀ ਦੇਨੑਿ ਵਿਖੰਮ ਥਾਇ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮਾਣੀ ॥
sa(n)nhee denhi vikha(n)m thaai mithaa mad maanee ||
They break into well-protected places, and revel in sweet wine.
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥
karamee aapo aapanee aape pachhutaanee ||
But they shall come to regret their actions - they create their own karma.
ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀ ॥੨੭॥
ajaraaeel pharesataa til peeRe ghaanee ||27||
Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall crush them like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||27||

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੇਵਕ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਸੇਈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
sevak sache saah ke seee paravaan ||
The servants of the True King are acceptable and approved.
ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣ ॥੧॥
doojaa sevan naanakaa se pach pach mue ajaan ||1||
Those ignorant ones who serve duality, O Nanak, rot, waste away and die. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
jo dhur likhiaa lekh prabh metanaa na jaai ||
That destiny which was pre-ordained by God from the very beginning cannot be erased.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥
raam naam dhan vakharo naanak sadaa dhiaai ||2||
The wealth of the Lord's Name is Nanak's capital; he meditates on it forever. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾਰਾਇਣਿ ਲਇਆ ਨਾਠੂੰਗੜਾ ਪੈਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਰਖੈ ॥
naaraain laiaa naathoo(n)gaRaa pair kithai rakhai ||
One who has received a kick from the Lord God - where can he place his foot?
ਕਰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਅਮਿਤਿਆ ਨਿਤ ਵਿਸੋ ਚਖੈ ॥
karadaa paap amitiaa nit viso chakhai ||
He commits countless sins, and continually eats poison.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਖੈ ॥
ni(n)daa karadaa pach muaa vich dehee bhakhai ||
Slandering others, he wastes away and dies; within his body, he burns.
ਸਚੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੈ ॥
sachai saahib maariaa kaun tis no rakhai ||
One who has been struck down by the True Lord and Master - who can save him now?
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੈ ॥੨੮॥
naanak tis saranaagatee jo purakh alakhai ||28||
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Unseen Lord, the Primal Being. ||28||

Salok, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣਾ ਕਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
narak ghor bahu dukh ghane akirataghanaa kaa thaan ||
In the most horrible hell, there is terrible pain and suffering. It is the place of the ungrateful.
ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਾਮੁ ॥੧॥
tin prabh maare naanakaa hoi hoi mue haraam ||1||
They are struck down by God, O Nanak, and they die a most miserable death. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਅਵਖਧ ਸਭੇ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
avakhadh sabhe keetian ni(n)dak kaa daaroo naahi ||
All kinds of medicines may be prepared, but there is no cure for the slanderer.
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
aap bhulaae naanakaa pach pach jonee paahi ||2||
Those whom the Lord Himself misleads, O Nanak, putrefy and rot in reincarnation. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੁਸਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ॥
tus ditaa poorai satiguroo har dhan sach akhut ||
By His Pleasure, the True Guru has blessed me with the inexhaustible wealth of the Name of the True Lord.
ਸਭਿ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਛੁਟੁ ॥
sabh a(n)dese mit gae jam kaa bhau chhut ||
All my anxiety is ended; I am rid of the fear of death.
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੁਟੁ ॥
kaam krodh buriaaeeaa(n) sa(n)g saadhoo tut ||
Sexual desire, anger and other evils have been subdued in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਹੁਇ ਮਰਸਨਿ ਬੁਟੁ ॥
vin sache doojaa sevade hui marasan but ||
Those who serve another, instead of the True Lord, die unfulfilled in the end.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਟੁ ॥੨੯॥
naanak kau gur bakhasiaa naamai sa(n)g jut ||29||
The Guru has blessed Nanak with forgiveness; he is united with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||29||
ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥
salok mah 4 ||
Salok, Fourth Mehl:
ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਦ੍ਰਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਨਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਜਮਾਲਿਆ ॥
tapaa na hovai a(n)drahu lobhee nit maaiaa no phirai jajamaaliaa ||
He is not a penitent, who is greedy within his heart, and who constantly chases after Maya like a leper.
ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਸਤੈ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਲਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਣਿ ਤਪੈ ਪੁਤੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ॥
ago de sadiaa satai dee bhikhiaa lae naahee pichho de pachhutaai kai aan tapai put vich bahaaliaa ||
When this penitent was first invited, he refused our charity; but later he repented and sent his son, who was seated in the congregation.
ਪੰਚ ਲੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਹਸਣ ਲਗੇ ਤਪਾ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥
pa(n)ch log sabh hasan lage tapaa lobh lahar hai gaaliaa ||
The village elders all laughed, saying that the waves of greed have destroyed this penitent.
ਜਿਥੈ ਥੋੜਾ ਧਨੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਿਥੈ ਤਪਾ ਭਿਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੈ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਪੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
jithai thoRaa dhan vekhai tithai tapaa bhitai naahee dhan bahutai dithai tapai dharam haariaa ||
If he sees only a little wealth, he does not bother to go there; but when he sees a lot of wealth, the penitent forsakes his vows.
ਭਾਈ ਏਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਹੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
bhaaee ehu tapaa na hovee bagulaa hai bahi saadh janaa veechaariaa ||
O Siblings of Destiny, he is not a penitent - he is only a stork. Sitting together, the Holy Congregation has so decided.
ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਤਪਾ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਏਤੁ ਦੋਖੈ ਤਪਾ ਦਯਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
sat purakh kee tapaa ni(n)daa karai sa(n)saarai kee usatatee vich hovai et dokhai tapaa day maariaa ||
The penitent slanders the True Primal Being, and sings the praises of the material world. For this sin, he is cursed by the Lord.
ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਤਪੇ ਨੋ ਫਲੁ ਲਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਪੇ ਕਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥
mahaa purakhaa(n) kee ni(n)daa kaa vekh j tape no phal lagaa sabh gaiaa tape kaa ghaaliaa ||
Behold the fruit the penitent gathers, for slandering the Great Primal Being; all his labors have gone in vain.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਪੰਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਪਾ ਸਦਾਏ ॥ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਪਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੰਚਾ ਨੋ ਉਘਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥
baahar bahai pa(n)chaa vich tapaa sadaae || a(n)dar bahai tapaa paap kamaae || har a(n)daralaa paap pa(n)chaa no ughaa kar vekhaaliaa ||
When he sits outside among the elders, he is called a penitent; But when he sits within the congregation, the penitent commits sin. The Lord has exposed the penitent's secret sin to the elders.
