ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਾ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavahi taa karahi bibhootaa si(n)ngee naad vajaavahi ||
When it pleases You, we smear our bodies with ashes, and blow the horn and the conch shell.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਮੁਲਾ ਸੇਖ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavai taa paRahi katebaa mulaa sekh kahaavahi ||
When it pleases You, we read the Islamic Scriptures, and are acclaimed as Mullahs and Shaykhs.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavai taa hovahi raaje ras kas bahut kamaavahi ||
When it pleases You, we become kings, and enjoy all sorts of tastes and pleasures.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavai teg vagaavahi sir mu(n)dee kat jaavahi ||
When it pleases You, we wield the sword, and cut off the heads of our enemies.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavai jaahi disa(n)tar sun galaa ghar aavahi ||
When it pleases You, we go out to foreign lands; hearing news of home, we come back again.
ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਇ ਰਚਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tudh bhaavai naai rachaavahi tudh bhaane too(n) bhaavahi ||
When it pleases You, we are attuned to the Name, and when it pleases You, we become pleasing to You.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
naanak ek kahai bena(n)tee hor sagale kooR kamaavahi ||1||
Nanak utters this one prayer; everything else is just the practice of falsehood. ||1||

First Mehl:
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਵਡਾ ਸਭਿ ਵਡਿਆਂਈਆ ਚੰਗੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
jaa too(n) vadaa sabh vadiaa(n)eeaa cha(n)gai cha(n)gaa hoee ||
You are so Great-all Greatness flows from You. You are So Good-Goodness radiates from You.
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਕੂੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
jaa too(n) sachaa taa sabh ko sachaa kooRaa koi na koee ||
You are True-all that flows from You is True. Nothing at all is false.
ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਚਲਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
aakhan vekhan bolan chalan jeevan maranaa dhaat ||
Talking, seeing, speaking, walking, living and dying-all these are transitory.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥
hukam saaj hukamai vich rakhai naanak sachaa aap ||2||
By the Hukam of His Command, He creates, and in His Command, He keeps us. O Nanak, He Himself is True. ||2||

Pauree:
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਈਐ ॥
satigur sev nisa(n)g bharam chukaaeeai ||
Serve the True Guru fearlessly, and your doubt shall be dispelled.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਕਾਰ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
satigur aakhai kaar s kaar kamaaeeai ||
Do that work which the True Guru asks you to do.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
satigur hoi daiaal ta naam dhiaaeeai ||
When the True Guru becomes merciful, we meditate on the Naam.
ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa bhagat s saar guramukh paaeeai ||
The profit of devotional worship is excellent. It is obtained by the Gurmukh.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
manamukh kooR gubaar kooR kamaaeeai ||
The self-willed manmukhs are trapped in the darkness of falsehood; they practice nothing but falsehood.
ਸਚੇ ਦੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਚਵਾਂਈਐ ॥
sache dai dar jaai sach chavaa(n)eeai ||
Go to the Gate of Truth, and speak the Truth.
ਸਚੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥
sachai a(n)dar mahal sach bulaaeeai ||
The True Lord calls the true ones to the Mansion of His Presence.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੧੫॥
naanak sach sadaa sachiaar sach samaaeeai ||15||
O Nanak, the true ones are forever true; they are absorbed in the True Lord. ||15||

Salok, First Mehl:
ਕਲਿ ਕਾਤੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਾਸਾਈ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੰਖ ਕਰਿ ਉਡਰਿਆ ॥
kal kaatee raaje kaasaaee dharam pa(n)kh kar udariaa ||
The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the knife, and the kings are butchers; righteousness has sprouted wings and flown away.
ਕੂੜੁ ਅਮਾਵਸ ਸਚੁ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹ ਚੜਿਆ ॥
kooR amaavas sach cha(n)dramaa deesai naahee kah chaRiaa ||
In this dark night of falsehood, the moon of Truth is not visible anywhere.
ਹਉ ਭਾਲਿ ਵਿਕੁੰਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
hau bhaal viku(n)nee hoee ||
I have searched in vain, and I am so confused;
ਆਧੇਰੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
aadherai raahu na koee ||
In this darkness, I cannot find the path.
ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਈ ॥
vich haumai kar dukh roee ||
In egotism, they cry out in pain.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
kahu naanak kin bidh gat hoee ||1||
Says Nanak, how will they be saved? ||1||

Third Mehl:
ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
kal keerat paragat chaanan sa(n)saar ||
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise has appeared as a Light in the world.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਤਰੈ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
guramukh koee utarai paar ||
How rare are those few Gurmukhs who swim across to the other side!
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
jis no nadar kare tis devai ||
The Lord bestows His Glance of Grace;
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੋ ਲੇਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak guramukh ratan so levai ||2||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh receives the jewel. ||2||

Pauree:
ਭਗਤਾ ਤੈ ਸੈਸਾਰੀਆ ਜੋੜੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhagataa tai saisaareeaa joR kade na aaiaa ||
Between the Lord's devotees and the people of the world, there can never be any true alliance.
ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਦਾ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
karataa aap abhul hai na bhulai kisai daa bhulaaiaa ||
The Creator Himself is infallible. He cannot be fooled; no one can fool Him.
ਭਗਤ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
bhagat aape melian jinee sacho sach kamaaiaa ||
He blends His devotees with Himself; they practice Truth, and only Truth.
ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
saisaaree aap khuaaian jinee kooR bol bol bikh khaaiaa ||
The Lord Himself leads the people of the world astray; they tell lies, and by telling lies, they eat poison.
ਚਲਣ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਵਿਸੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
chalan saar na jaananee kaam karodh vis vadhaaiaa ||
They do not recognize the ultimate reality, that we all must go; they continue to cultivate the poisons of sexual desire and anger.
ਭਗਤ ਕਰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
bhagat karan har chaakaree jinee anadin naam dhiaaiaa ||
The devotees serve the Lord; night and day, they meditate on the Naam.
ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
daasan daas hoi kai jinee vichahu aap gavaaiaa ||
Becoming the slaves of the Lord's slaves, they eradicate selfishness and conceit from within.
ਓਨਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
onaa khasamai kai dar mukh ujale sachai sabad suhaaiaa ||16||
In the Court of their Lord and Master, their faces are radiant; they are embellished and exalted with the True Word of the Shabad. ||16||
ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:
ਸਬਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ॥
sabaahee saalaah jinee dhiaaiaa ik man ||
Those who praise the Lord in the early hours of the morning and meditate on Him single-mindedly,
ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਵਖਤੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੜਿ ਮੁਏ ॥
seee poore saah vakhatai upar laR mue ||
are the perfect kings; at the right time, they die fighting.
ਦੂਜੈ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰਾਹ ਮਨ ਕੀਆ ਮਤੀ ਖਿੰਡੀਆ ॥
doojai bahute raah man keeaa matee khi(n)deeaa ||
In the second watch, the focus of the mind is scattered in all sorts of ways.
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਏ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ॥
bahut pae asagaah gote khaahi na nikalahi ||
So many fall into the bottomless pit; they are dragged under, and they cannot get out again.
