ਤਟਨ ਖਟਨ ਜਟਨ ਹੋਮਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਡੰਡਧਾਰ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥
tatan khatan jatan homan naahee da(n)dadhaar suaau ||1||
Making pilgrimages to sacred rivers, observing the six rituals, wearing matted and tangled hair, performing fire sacrifices and carrying ceremonial walking sticks - none of these are of any use. ||1||
ਜਤਨ ਭਾਂਤਨ ਤਪਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਥਨ ਕਥਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਹ ਪਾਈ ਠਾਉ ॥
jatan bhaa(n)tan tapan bhraman anik kathan kathate nahee thaah paaee thaau ||
All sorts of efforts, austerities, wanderings and various speeches - none of these will lead you to find the Lord's Place.
ਸੋਧਿ ਸਗਰ ਸੋਧਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੯॥
sodh sagar sodhanaa sukh naanakaa bhaj naau ||2||2||39||
I have considered all considerations, O Nanak, but peace comes only by vibrating and meditating on the Name. ||2||2||39||

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਛਲੁ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਤਰਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
patit paavan bhagat bachhal bhai haran taaran taran ||1|| rahaau ||
The Purifier of sinners, the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear - He carries us across to the other side. ||1||Pause||
ਨੈਨ ਤਿਪਤੇ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਜਸੁ ਤੋਖਿ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਰਨ ॥੧॥
nain tipate daras pekh jas tokh sunat karan ||1||
My eyes are satisfied, gazing upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; my ears are satisfied, hearing His Praise. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਦਾਤੇ ਦੀਨ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਨ ॥
praan naath anaath daate deen gobid saran ||
He is the Master of the praanaa, the breath of life; He is the Giver of Support to the unsupported. I am meek and poor - I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord of the Universe.
ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ਗਹੀ ਓਟ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ॥੨॥੧॥੪੦॥
aas pooran dukh binaasan gahee ot naanak har charan ||2||1||40||
He is the Fulfiller of hope, the Destroyer of pain. Nanak grasps the Support of the Feet of the Lord. ||2||1||40||

Kaanraa, Fifth Mehl:
ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਆਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
charan saran daiaal thaakur aan naahee jaai ||
I seek the Sanctuary of the Feet of my Merciful Lord and Master; I do not go anywhere else.
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਧਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
patit paavan birad suaamee udharate har dhiaai ||1|| rahaau ||
It is the Inherent Nature of our Lord and Master to purify sinners. Those who meditate on the Lord are saved. ||1||Pause||
ਸੈਸਾਰ ਗਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਪਤਿਤ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਅੰਧ ॥
saisaar gaar bikaar saagar patit moh maan a(n)dh ||
The world is a swamp of wickedness and corruption. The blind sinner has fallen into the ocean of emotional attachment and pride,
ਬਿਕਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਧੰਧ ॥
bikal maaiaa sa(n)g dha(n)dh ||
bewildered by the entanglements of Maya.
ਕਰੁ ਗਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪਿ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥
kar gahe prabh aap kaadhahu raakh lehu gobi(n)d raai ||1||
God Himself has taken me by the hand and lifted me up and out of it; save me, O Sovereign Lord of the Universe. ||1||
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਸਨਾਥ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੋਟਿ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
anaath naath sanaath sa(n)tan kot paap binaas ||
He is the Master of the masterless, the Supporting Lord of the Saints, the Neutralizer of millions of sins.
ਮਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੈ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਸ ॥
man darasanai kee piaas ||
My mind thirsts for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਨਤਾਸ ॥
prabh pooran gunataas ||
God is the Perfect Treasure of Virtue.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥੨॥੪੧॥
kripaal daiaal gupaal naanak har rasanaa gun gaai ||2||2||41||
O Nanak, sing and savor the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the Kind and Compassionate Lord of the World. ||2||2||41||

ਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਰਉ ਅਨਿਕ ਡਾਰਉ ॥

Countless times, I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice
ਸੁਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਪਲਕ ਰਾਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukh pri suhaag palak raat ||1|| rahaau ||
to that moment of peace, on that night when I was joined with my Beloved. ||1||Pause||
ਕਨਿਕ ਮੰਦਰ ਪਾਟ ਸੇਜ ਸਖੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਇਨ ਸਿਉ ਤਾਤ ॥੧॥
kanik ma(n)dar paat sej sakhee mohi naahi in siu taat ||1||
Mansions of gold, and beds of silk sheets - O sisters, I have no love for these. ||1||
ਮੁਕਤ ਲਾਲ ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਾਤ ॥
mukat laal anik bhog bin naam naanak haat ||
Pearls, jewels and countless pleasures, O Nanak, are useless and destructive without the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਰੂਖੋ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸੈਨ ਸਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੂਖਿ ਬਿਹਾਤ ॥੨॥੩॥੪੨॥
rookho bhojan bhoom sain sakhee pri sa(n)g sookh bihaat ||2||3||42||
Even with only dry crusts of bread, and a hard floor on which to sleep, my life passes in peace and pleasure with my Beloved, O sisters. ||2||3||42||

ਅਹੰ ਤੋਰੋ ਮੁਖੁ ਜੋਰੋ ॥
aha(n) toro mukh joro ||
Give up your ego, and turn your face to God.
ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਮਨੁ ਲੋਰੋ ॥
gur gur karat man loro ||
Let your yearning mind call out, "Guru, Guru".
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੋ ਮੋਰੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pri preet piaaro moro ||1|| rahaau ||
My Beloved is the Lover of Love. ||1||Pause||
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਆਗਨਿ ਚੈਨਾ ਤੋਰੋ ਰੀ ਤੋਰੋ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਤੋਰੋ ॥੧॥
grihi sej suhaavee aagan chainaa toro ree toro pa(n)ch dootan siu sa(n)g toro ||1||
The bed of your household shall be cozy, and your courtyard shall be comfortable; shatter and break the bonds which tie you to the five thieves. ||1||
ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਨਿਜ ਆਸਨਿ ਊਂਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਸੋਰੋ ॥
aai na jaai base nij aasan oo(n)dh kamal bigasoro ||
You shall not come and go in reincarnation; you shall dwell in your own home deep within, and your inverted heart-lotus shall blossom forth.
ਛੁਟਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੋਰੋ ॥
chhutakee haumai soro ||
The turmoil of egotism shall be silenced.
ਗਾਇਓ ਰੀ ਗਾਇਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨੀ ਗਹੇਰੋ ॥੨॥੪॥੪੩॥
gaaio ree gaaio prabh naanak gunee gahero ||2||4||43||
Nanak sings - he sings the Praises of God, the Ocean of Virtue. ||2||4||43||

ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਜਾਪਿ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥
taa(n) te jaap manaa har jaap ||
This is why you should chant and meditate on the Lord, O mind.
ਜੋ ਸੰਤ ਬੇਦ ਕਹਤ ਪੰਥੁ ਗਾਖਰੋ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਅਹੰ ਤਾਪ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo sa(n)t bed kahat pa(n)th gaakharo moh magan aha(n) taap || rahaau ||
The Vedas and the Saints say that the path is treacherous and difficult. You are intoxicated with emotional attachment and the fever of egotism. ||Pause||
ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੧॥
jo raate maate sa(n)g bapuree maaiaa moh sa(n)taap ||1||
Those who are imbued and intoxicated with the wretched Maya, suffer the pains of emotional attachment. ||1||
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਊ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ਆਪ ॥
naam japat sooo jan udharai jisahi udhaarahu aap ||
That humble being is saved, who chants the Naam; You Yourself save him.
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੋਹ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ॥੨॥੫॥੪੪॥
binas jaai moh bhai bharamaa naanak sa(n)t prataap ||2||5||44||
Emotional attachment, fear and doubt are dispelled, O Nanak, by the Grace of the Saints. ||2||5||44||
