ਵਰਨ ਭੇਖ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ॥
varan bhekh nahee brahaman khatree ||
There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kh'shaatriya.
ਦੇਉ ਨ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਗਊ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ॥
deu na dehuraa gaoo gaaitree ||
There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer.
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਨਹੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਾ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
hom jag nahee teerath naavan naa ko poojaa laaidaa ||10||
There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. ||10||
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੁਲਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਜੀ ॥
naa ko mulaa naa ko kaajee ||
There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸੇਖੁ ਮਸਾਇਕੁ ਹਾਜੀ ॥
naa ko sekh masaaik haajee ||
There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca.
ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਉ ਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
raeeat raau na haumai duneeaa naa ko kahan kahaaidaa ||11||
There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11||
ਭਾਉ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ॥
bhaau na bhagatee naa siv sakatee ||
There was no love or devotion, no Shiva or Shakti - no energy or matter.
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਕਤੀ ॥
saajan meet bi(n)d nahee rakatee ||
There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood.
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਏਹੋ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
aape saahu aape vanajaaraa saache eho bhaaidaa ||12||
He Himself is the banker, and He Himself is the merchant. Such is the Pleasure of the Will of the True Lord. ||12||
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ॥
bed kateb na si(n)mrit saasat ||
There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Simritees or Shaastras.
ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਉਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਆਸਤ ॥
paath puraan udai nahee aasat ||
There was no recitation of the Puraanas, no sunrise or sunset.
ਕਹਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
kahataa bakataa aap agochar aape alakh lakhaaidaa ||13||
The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. ||13||
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
jaa tis bhaanaa taa jagat upaaiaa ||
When He so willed, He created the world.
ਬਾਝੁ ਕਲਾ ਆਡਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥
baajh kalaa aadaan rahaaiaa ||
Without any supporting power, He sustained the universe.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
brahamaa bisan mahes upaae maaiaa mohu vadhaaidaa ||14||
He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14||
ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
virale kau gur sabad sunaaiaa ||
How rare is that person who listens to the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
kar kar dekhai hukam sabaaiaa ||
He created the creation, and watches over it; the Hukam of His Command is over all.
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਅਰੰਭੇ ਗੁਪਤਹੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
kha(n)d brahama(n)d paataal ara(n)bhe gupatahu paragatee aaidaa ||15||
He formed the planets, solar systems and nether regions, and brought what was hidden to manifestation. ||15||
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
taa kaa a(n)t na jaanai koee ||
No one knows His limits.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
poore gur te sojhee hoee ||
This understanding comes from the Perfect Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਏ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੩॥੧੫॥
naanak saach rate bisamaadee bisam bhae gun gaaidaa ||16||3||15||
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His Glorious Praises, they are filled with wonder. ||16||3||15||

Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥
aape aap upaai niraalaa ||
He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached.
ਸਾਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
saachaa thaan keeo daiaalaa ||
The Merciful Lord has established His True Home.
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
paun paanee aganee kaa ba(n)dhan kaaiaa kot rachaaidaa ||1||
Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1||
ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰੈ ॥
nau ghar thaape thaapanahaarai ||
The Creator established the nine gates.
ਦਸਵੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥
dasavai vaasaa alakh apaarai ||
In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord.
ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
saair sapat bhare jal niramal guramukh mail na laaidaa ||2||
The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2||
ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥
rav sas deepak jot sabaaee ||
The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
aape kar vekhai vadiaaee ||
Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness.
ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
jot saroop sadaa sukhadaataa sache sobhaa paaidaa ||3||
The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3||
ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
gaR mahi haat patan vaapaaraa ||
Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there.
ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥
poorai tol tolai vanajaaraa ||
The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights.
ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
aape ratan visaahe levai aape keemat paaidaa ||4||
He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4||
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥
keemat paaee paavanahaarai ||
The Appraiser appraises its value.
ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥
veparavaah poore bha(n)daarai ||
The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures.
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
sarab kalaa le aape rahiaa guramukh kisai bujhaaidaa ||5||
He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5||
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ॥
nadar kare pooraa gur bhetai ||
When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru.
ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ਫੇਟੈ ॥
jam ja(n)daar na maarai phetai ||
The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੬॥
jiu jal a(n)tar kamal bigaasee aape bigas dhiaaidaa ||6||
He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6||
ਆਪੇ ਵਰਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥
aape varakhai a(n)mrit dhaaraa ||
He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of jewels,
ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
ratan javehar laal apaaraa ||
Diamonds, and rubies of priceless value.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
satigur milai ta pooraa paaeeai prem padaarath paaidaa ||7||
When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7||
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੈ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥
prem padaarath lahai amolo ||
Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love
ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਘਾਟਸਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥
kab hee na ghaatas pooraa tolo ||
- his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight.
ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
sache kaa vaapaaree hovai sacho saudaa paaidaa ||8||
The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8||
ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
sachaa saudaa viralaa ko paae ||
How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise.
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
pooraa satigur milai milaae ||
Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord.
