ਲਾਗੀ ਭੂਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੩॥
laagee bhookh maaiaa mag johai mukat padaarath mohi khare ||3||
Driven by hunger, it sees the path of Maya's riches; this emotional attachment takes away the treasure of liberation. ||3||
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਢੂਢਤ ਥਾਕਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
karan palaav kare nahee paavai it ut dhoodhat thaak pare ||
Weeping and wailing, he does not receive them; he searches here and there, and grows weary.
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਕੂੜ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੪॥
kaam krodh aha(n)kaar viaape kooR kuta(n)b siu preet kare ||4||
Engrossed in sexual desire, anger and egotism, he falls in love with his false relatives. ||4||
ਖਾਵੈ ਭੋਗੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਕਾਲ ਘਰੇ ॥
khaavai bhogai sun sun dekhai pahir dikhaavai kaal ghare ||
He eats and enjoys, listens and watches, and dresses up to show off in this house of death.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਕਾਲੁ ਟਰੇ ॥੫॥
bin gurasabad na aap pachhaanai bin har naam na kaal tare ||5||
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he does not undersand himself. Without the Lord's Name, death cannot be avoided. ||5||
ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਛੀਨਿ ਖਰੇ ॥
jetaa mohu haumai kar bhoole meree meree karate chheen khare ||
The more attachment and egotism delude and confuse him, the more he cries out, "Mine, mine!", and the more he loses out.
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਸਹਸੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਧੂਰਿ ਪਰੇ ॥੬॥
tan dhan binasai sahasai sahasaa phir pachhutaavai mukh dhoor pare ||6||
His body and wealth pass away, and he is torn by skepticism and cynicism; in the end, he regrets and repents, when the dust falls on his face. ||6||
ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖਿਸਿਆ ਕਫੁ ਕੰਠੁ ਬਿਰੂਧੋ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਢਰੇ ॥
biradh bhaiaa joban tan khisiaa kaph ka(n)th biroodho nainahu neer dhare ||
He grows old, his body and youth waste away, and his throat is plugged with mucous; water flows from his eyes.
ਚਰਣ ਰਹੇ ਕਰ ਕੰਪਣ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰੇ ॥੭॥
charan rahe kar ka(n)pan laage saakat raam na ridai hare ||7||
He feet fail him, and his hands shake and tremble; the faithless cynic does not enshrine the Lord in his heart. ||7||
ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਈ ਕਾਲੀ ਹੂ ਧਉਲੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਖਿਓ ਘਰੇ ॥
surat gaee kaalee hoo dhaule kisai na bhaavai rakhio ghare ||
His intellect fails him, his black hair turns white, and no one wants to keep him in their home.
ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਐਸੇ ਦੋਖ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਰੇ ਨਰਕਿ ਖਰੇ ॥੮॥
bisarat naam aise dokh laagahi jam maar samaare narak khare ||8||
Forgetting the Naam, these are the stigmas which stick to him; the Messenger of Death beats him, and drags him to hell. ||8||
ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੋ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥
poorab janam ko lekh na mitaee janam marai kaa kau dos dhare ||
The record of one's past actions cannot be erased; who else is to blame for one's birth and death?
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਾਦਿ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਰੇ ॥੯॥
bin gur baad jeevan hor maranaa bin gurasabadai janam jare ||9||
Without the Guru, life and death are pointless; without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, life just burns away. ||9||
ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰ ਭਏ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਫੋਕਟ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ ॥
khusee khuaar bhae ras bhogan phokat karam vikaar kare ||
The pleasures enjoyed in happiness bring ruin; acting in corruption is useless indulgence.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਖੋਇਓ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਪਰੇ ॥੧੦॥
naam bisaar lobh mool khoio sir dharam raai kaa da(n)d pare ||10||
Forgetting the Naam, and caught by greed, he betrays his own source; the club of the Righteous Judge of Dharma will strike him over the head. ||10||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥
guramukh raam naam gun gaavahi jaa kau har prabh nadar kare ||
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name; the Lord God blesses them with His Glance of Grace.
ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੧॥
te niramal purakh apara(n)par poore te jag mahi gur govi(n)d hare ||11||
Those beings are pure, perfect unlimited and infinite; in this world, they are the embodiment of the Guru, the Lord of the Universe. ||11||
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਭਾਉ ਕਰੇ ॥
har simarahu gur bachan samaarahu sa(n)gat har jan bhaau kare ||
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord; meditate and contemplate the Guru's Word, and love to associate with the humble servants of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧੨॥੮॥
har jan gur paradhaan duaarai naanak tin jan kee ren hare ||12||8||
The Lord's humble servants are the embodiment of the Guru; they are supreme and respected in the Court of the Lord. Nanak seeks the dust of the feet of those humble servants of the Lord. ||12||8||

ਮਾਰੂ ਕਾਫੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੨ ॥
maaroo kaaphee mahalaa 1 ghar 2 ||
Maaroo, Kaafee, First Mehl, Second House:
ਆਵਉ ਵੰਞਉ ਡੁੰਮਣੀ ਕਿਤੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੇਉ ॥
aavau va(n)njau du(n)manee kitee mitr kareu ||
The double-minded person comes and goes, and has numerous friends.
ਸਾ ਧਨ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਵਾਢੀ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੇਉ ॥੧॥
saa dhan dhoee na lahai vaadhee kiu dheereu ||1||
The soul-bride is separated from her Lord, and she has no place of rest; how can she be comforted? ||1||
ਮੈਡਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਆਪਨੜੇ ਪਿਰ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
maidaa man rataa aapanaRe pir naal ||
My mind is attuned to the Love of my Husband Lord.
ਹਉ ਘੋਲਿ ਘੁਮਾਈ ਖੰਨੀਐ ਕੀਤੀ ਹਿਕ ਭੋਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau ghol ghumaaee kha(n)neeai keetee hik bhoree nadar nihaal ||1|| rahaau ||
I am devoted, dedicated, a sacrifice to the Lord; if only He would bless me with His Glance of Grace, even for an instant! ||1||Pause||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਉ ॥
peeeaRai dohaaganee saahuraRai kiu jaau ||
I am a rejected bride, abandoned in my parents' home; how can I go to my in-laws now?
ਮੈ ਗਲਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੁਠੜੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਝੂਰਿ ਮਰਾਉ ॥੨॥
mai gal augan muthaRee bin pir jhoor maraau ||2||
I wear my faults around my neck; without my Husband Lord, I am grieving, and wasting away to death. ||2||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
peeeaRai pir sa(n)malaa saahuraRai ghar vaas ||
But if, in my parents' home, I remember my Husband Lord, then I will come to dwell in the home of my in-laws yet.
ਸੁਖਿ ਸਵੰਧਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
sukh sava(n)dh sohaaganee pir paaiaa gunataas ||3||
The happy soul-brides sleep in peace; they find their Husband Lord, the treasure of virtue. ||3||
ਲੇਫੁ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਪਟ ਕੀ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਅੰਗਿ ਬਣਾਇ ॥
leph nihaalee pat kee kaapaR a(n)g banaai ||
Their blankets and mattresses are made of silk, and so are the clothes on their bodies.
ਪਿਰੁ ਮੁਤੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤਿਨ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪॥
pir mutee dohaaganee tin dukhee rain vihaai ||4||
The Lord rejects the impure soul-brides. Their life-night passes in misery. ||4||
